Like Groove said, whats the big deal? If you're a student of jazz, you know the language. If not, just don't bother replying to this. It's meaningless. These contemprary fusion/rock drummers are not jazz drummers. Accept it, that's the truth. They themselves say it. Jesus Christ you guys are thick. HAHA! You're giving these guys titles that they don't want.
Guess what, Vinnie can't play drum corps and march up and down the field for 2 hours. Will you deny that?

Perhaps it's not realistic to expect such an artful use of the language [or opins!] on a public drummers forum

As I recall, the initial post made the statement about how "we" consider Vinnie "this & that"...but i don't remember anyone specific ever initially making those broad statements, except a few seem to want to believe...just because we feel highly of VC's playing abilities in here?! I certainly NEVER have said that he's a strict jazz [swing/bop/trad/roots] player - & nor do i want him to be! I want him to be Vinnie, & that's all!

I do not understand why Jazz has to still be played like all the old dead jazz guys played. Miles played jazz but moved on and did different things to jazz. According to Wynton ,Miles did not play jazz and was not saved till Wynton himself came back to save jazz and send it back to Louis Armstrong. Why can't music progress or is it like the Blues and Jazz societies made up of guys that wish they could play but only listen to old scrithy scratchy records because that is what Down BEat said is jazz. Tried to stay out of this but it jsut got so ridiculous. I agree with Brady........and Zappa.......jsut smells funny.

Don, Jack doesn't play like the old guys. But he still speaks the language. I think maybe most of you in here are unfamiliar with what we're saying when we say language. It's hard to know when you don't know the language and don't play jazz.
It's not about copying Max Roach (who's alive). It's about knowing the language. Gerry Hemingway is more in left field than anyone. He still speaks the language. Jim Black, Joey Baron. These guys are creative and very original they still speak the language of jazz. VC DW, ZDanz, Keith Carlock....These guys don't. If you transcribe everything vinnie played on chicks gig, you find find anything that's the language of jazz. It's fusion drumming. Amazing, yes. But not jazz.

I imagine that "jazz" recording sessions do not pay as much as "pop" sessions. Perhaps that's why Vinnie does not do them, since he's doing music that sells more. I am just speculating. Sure, there are drummers who have followed the "tradition" more than Vinnie, and can fall into a past time period better than V. They specialize in that sound But to say Vinnie can't play "jazz" is a crock of shit. Sorry for cussing. [img]mad.gif[/img]
The only persons saying this anti-jazz Vinnie are musicians. The public really can't tell the difference. If Vinnie were on a session and the producer said, "play like the old jazz guys" then I believe Vinnie would give him what he wants.

So, if you're playing with a big band and you're going ding-ding-ah-ding on the ride cymbal and it's not jazz...what is it called? It's not disco, or country or rock or latin...so what's it called then?

Maybe the argument is that it's not Bop...

Ask any metal-head and he'll tell you it's all jazz to him.
